Max Cilla, a flute player from Martinique known as “The father of the Mornes flute”, is a master musician, decorated Knight in the National Order of Merit in 2016, for his work on the traditional bamboo flute of Martinique, which he makes himself, and still plays with great virtuosity, at over 80 years of age.
“France/Antilles/Japan” is an intercultural project featuring Max Cilla and Mié Ogura, who met in 2022, thanks to the premiere of a concert with OFF: French Flute Orchestra under the direction of Marc Hajar (artistic director Pierre-Yves Artaud) at the Villejuif Conservatory, near Paris. The two guest musicians revisited their own compositions, ranging from Caribbean music to jazz, from classical to contemporary.
The richness of these encounters lies in the balance between the color of the two very different cultures, which come together thanks to the shared improvisational language, universal musical writing, arrangements by Mié Ogura.
Max Cilla's music, based on the “oral” traditions of the local people of Martinique's Mornes community, will leave its mark on the “written” orchestral repertoire, enabling this music to be performed across genres and generations.
In 2024, for the second edition, Mié took up the challenge of symphonic orchestration with two concerts with the Orchestre Symphonique the 19th and 10th Paris conservatory, conducted by Jane Latron and Stéphane Granjon, and another presentation to close the season with the Improvisation Orchestra of the 19th Paris conservatory.
On this occasion, their improvisations in the form of a “concerto” added a new touch to their music.
This historic event, which highlighted the emergence of Antilles’s music through the compositions of Max Cilla, delighted the audience.
“This exciting and harmonious encounter between Mié Ogura and the compositions of the great Max Cilla; an encounter that seeks only to fuse these two musical universes has found a worldwide echo...”. From an article in “France-Antilles”, France's leading overseas newspaper.
