Symphony of memories
A cross-generational artistic project

Charles Aubry, the visual artist and Mié Ogura, met, began working together on the “Symphony of memories” project (transcribing memories into music) at La Pop, a multi-disciplinary creative venue floating on the canals of Paris 19e in 2023.

“Symphony of memories” plunges into moments in the lives of elderly residents of EHPAD COS Alice Guy Paris 19e, inspired by improvisations by Mié Ogura, Sébastien Adams, Imma Santacru and Hector Parra, the residents drew their personal “souvenirs”. Then, young students from the improvisation workshop of the 19th Paris conservatory (directed by Mié Ogura) interpreted these drawings using enthusiastic “scores”, these rich sounds of intimate multi-layered stories were recorded and remixed by Charlie Aubry, to weave into his work of art in the barge's hold.

Then on June 3, the opening day of the sound installation, the artisans of this Symphony of Memories - young student musicians and elderly residents - came together. This opening concert was selected by Le Monde as “10 ideas to enjoy at the Nuit Blanche du Grand Paris” from among 108 artistic events organized on the same day.

The second edition took place in 2024 at the Musée FRAC- MECA (Regional contemporary art fund) in Bordeaux.
The two artists visited L'EHPAD le Sablonat in Bordeaux, to meet and invite volunteer residents to draw their memories on music paper. The scores were then played on the flute by Mié Ogura and commented on by their listeners in front of the camera. From the multiple recordings of these encounters, Charlie Aubry imagined an installation specializing in this material full of effect.

The opening concert on the first day invited a local musician's association, “le Jazz Web Project”, to perform 10 short pieces by Mié Ogura. The opening attracted over 1,000 visitors from all over the Aquitaine region. A documentary video of the interaction with the elderly and the improvisation was shown at the center of the artwork, composed of three solid wood cabinets covered with texts engraved with fragments of life stories told by the elderly, occupying the space with the six Plexiglas boxes containing neon lights, with loudspeakers broadcasting a sound montage of the residents' voices. This exhibition is part of “Primavera, Primavera”, produced by FRAC Nouvelle Aquitaine, a joint composition with Charles Aubry, accompanied by a handwritten score by Mié Ogura.
